Is it worth more to get backlinks from sites that are relevant to your keywords and the topic of your site? I’ve heard yes and no. I know Google has some pretty sophisticated algorithms but there seems to be a lot of room for error if an assessment of relevance is done by an algorithm.

Great question, and well reasoned re: the room for error with relevance assessment.
With these sorts of “hear say” arguments, I tend to not have the patience to get involved in the debates and just test things out myself to see what works, so that’s about as much light as I can shed on this:
